Physical Fitness: A Must For Preschoolers

Childhood is a crucial stage for the development of a person- physically, socially, emotionally, and for their overall being. The early stages of childhood development lay the foundation of a society. The initial five years of a child’s life are very important. These are also known as the formative years of a child.

Physical Fitness

In their early childhood, kids start developing their characteristics. Children can’t instinctively differentiate between good and bad. They can be molded into any form. It is important to impart the right kind of training from the very beginning. If they are given the right atmosphere, they can transform into strong individuals and can demonstrate the best qualities of leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Why Has Physical Fitness Become a Big Concern for Preschoolers Today?

Nowadays, parents are ignoring the physical well being of their children, due to their busy schedules. Children are pampered with fancy foods, which is not good for them. Kids spend more time playing indoor games which lower physical activity. Another threat to their overall growth is exposure to the internet, movies, and electronic games. Children are spending most of their time playing electronic games and watching TV shows which is detrimental for their growth.

Importance of Physical Activities in Early Childhood

It is very important for the children to be physically active and eat the right food. Physical activity helps your child in every possible way.

Some of the benefits of physical activities are:

  • Keeping their heart and lungs healthy and strong
  • Development of strong bones
  • Maintaining a healthy body weight
  • Reducing the risk of diseases
  • Makes them confident and self reliant
  • Improves concentration
  • Helps the child develop a positive attitude
  • Helps the child get better sleep

The early physical activity also prevents the child from type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and some forms of cancer. A child becomes stronger, not just from outside, but from inside as well.

How Can Parents Help Their Children Remain Physically Active?

Parents need to encourage their children to perform a variety of physical activities.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises parents to:

  • Limit time children spend in sedentary activities that include watching TV, video games.
  • Watch high-quality programs with your children.
  • Try to limit screen time for children aged 2 to 5 years to 1 hour a day or even less.
  • Turn off the TV during mealtimes.
  • Don't keep computers, video games or TVs in children's room.

How Can Teachers Help Preschoolers Gain Physical Fitness?

It would be extremely beneficial for children if their physical training starts from preschool. If you are looking for a preschool, choose the one which combines classroom studies and physical activities. The program is simple and is based on the natural movements of children.

Teachers at preschool should be involved in a child’s physical training and outdoor activities. They should be well aware of the need of a physical education training for children and always encourage children to participate in outdoor activities which require physical movement of children. Children can participate in swimming, gymnastics, hockey, jogging etc. for endurance, strength and flexibility.

Physical education must be promoted in preschools for the complete growth and development of the children.
